Boko Haram: Britain trains 104 Nigerian Air Force personnel
The Nigerian Air Force says its 100 airmen and four officers are currently undergoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism training by the British Military Advisory Training Team.
This was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja and signed by the Director of Public Relations of the NAF, Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa.
The statement said: “A 30-man BMATT team has since arrived Nigeria on January 3 to train the first batch of NAF Regiment personnel, comprising 4 officers and 100 airmen, at the Ground Training Centre, Kaduna.
“The 3-week training programme is focusing on airfield defence and critical assets protection, and would be rounding up on January 28, 2016.”
According to the statement, the NAF is adopting a multi-prong approach to achieve both immediate and long term training objectives.
It also said the strategies being adopted include collaboration with other countries in the area of training, facilities expansion and upgrade, as well as curriculum review in NAF training schools.
“This will enhance their capacity to provide quality training for more personnel locally, even as the Service seeks to increase existing training slots abroad,” it said.
The statement said in an effort to meet the local training projection for 2016, the NAF had relocated 50 student pilots currently undergoing primary flying training at the 301 Flying Training School, Kaduna to Makurdi, Benue State due to bad weather.
It further explained that the move was intended to avoid disruption of their training by adverse weather conditions.
The statement said the students scheduled for helicopter flying were expected to gain some hours on fixed aircraft before proceeding for basic helicopter training at IHFS Enugu, South Africa and United Kingdom.
It disclosed that NAF was on the verge of commencing another recruitment exercise for fresh intakes and advised interested applicants to check the NAF official recruitment portal.
