OBJ describes EFCC as a 'toothless bulldog'

‎‎– Obasanjo has expressed concern over the EFCC's performance

– He advised President Buhari on how to return power to the agency
Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised the performance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) defining it as a "toothless bulldog".

Obasanjo, speaking during the celebration of his 79th birthday, said the agency recorded enormous achievements under Nuhu Ribadu, its first chairman.

"When Nuhu Ribadu was handling the EFCC, he handled it in such a way that people coined the saying that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of Ribadu," the ex-president stated.

"And the thing you will ask is how did we go down, how did we lose that, how? Nuhu Ribadu is still here, he is still alive, the institution that we started together is still there. What made the institution to become a toothless bulldog?"

The ex-president urged the Buhari administration and stakeholders to take a critical look at the situation that made the agency lose its power to tame corruption.

He said the administration must avoid any action that could lead the agency to take a step forward and three steps backward.

The EFCC was established in 2003, partially in response to pressure from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering, which named Nigeria as one of 23 countries non-cooperative in the international community's efforts to fight money laundering.

Under Nuhu Ribadu, the anti-graft commission addressed financial corruption by prosecuting and convicting a number of high-profile corrupt individuals.
